Studying Abroad with EAP

So I've never been one to keep a blog or anything of the sort... but I figured this would probably be as good a reason as any to start.
I have wanted to study abroad for as long as I can remember, so here is where you will get to read about my adventures as I take the leap and study abroad in Lyon, France!
Wish me luck and be sure to keep in touch :) and maybe even leave a comment now and then so I can see who's actually reading this!

Bonjour La France!

ok. so its 1:53pm on august 24, and i am finally getting a little bit settled. let me tell you, it was a much more complicated travel experience than i had originally anticipated.
to start, here's what was supposed to happen:
i  was going to take three flights on delta to get across the country to meet my international flight in philadelphia. plane one was supposed to be sacramento to atlanta. plane two was supposed to be atlanta to cincinnati. and plane three was supposed to be cincinnati to philadelphia. where i would then get on my first of two international flights with british airways. first from philadelphia to london/heathrow. and then london/heathrow to lyon. and my luggage was supposed to follow me through all of this, with me getting it and rechecking it before the international flights.
here's what actually happened. plane one was successful, i was impressed that it even basically left on time. plane two was where everything went wrong. to start, when we were all sitting on the plane just waiting for it to take off, it was ridiculously hot. the passengers were practically melting. now i don't know about you, but i'm used to freezing on planes, not melting. so to try to fix this they were checking out the air conditioning before landing. though it was still hot, they decided we were good to go. turns out they were wrong. we got about a quarter or a third of the way to cincinnati and the pilot decided it would be best if we headed back to atlanta, something about the cabin pressure not being right and therefore being unable to get to the appropriate altitude. problem number one. i ended up getting a direct flight to philadelphia. problem solved? not quite. my luggage didn't get this same treatment. so it took hours to figure out, but eventually it was determined that delta would be responsible for getting my luggage to the residence that i will be staying at for at least my first two weeks (minus the first night). i was to continue on with the original plans for my international flights, which worked out just fine. except now i only have one extra outfit, and no pj's, and i'm REALLY hoping my luggage actually shows up tomorrow evening at some point.
so my last flight landed in lyon, and i was supposed to take a bus to get to the servas host i will be spending tonight with. problem: that bus doesn't run anymore. at this point i'm super tired so i realize i need to sit down and compose myself for a second before i figure out what to do next. i can't figure out how to call anyone because me and foreign phones evidently aren't friends. i do, however, figure out the atm so i can get some euros. but everything works out, the french are really nice and helpful, especially if you attempt some french first, and i managed to take a train and then the metro where i then got picked up and driven to patricia's (the servas host) apartment.
oh but for the most part my flights were fine and i was actually able to get a little bit of sleep. and i even made a friend on the first international flight who will be studying in a different city in france for the first semester.
feel up to speed? i hope so. its been a long three days and i'm thinking its about time for a nap.

  1. Wow, I'm 3 times zones behind the rest of your commenters, and I get to comment first on your arrival! You've been spared a paragraph in French because the computer ate it when I tried to fix the spelling of one little verb to have the correct person...but tomorrow I'll be drafting in MSWord, with accents & everything. I'll try to call you in a couple of hours...this free calls to France thing is good.

  3. i probably wont be sending out an address for a couple weeks, because i'm going to wait until i'm with my host family. but don't worry, i will :)

  4. You might want to send your address out via private e-mail to known individuals - your host family may not want strangers knowing where they live...
